Desco invests in solar energy to drive sustainable progress

Desco Electronic Recyclers has completed a major three-stage solar power project, underscoring its commitment to sustainable practices and operational efficiency. This significant investment positions Desco as a leader in the renewable energy sector and demonstrates its proactive stance on reducing environmental impact.

In November 2021, Desco took its first step towards renewable energy by installing a 200 kW hybrid inverter system. This initial setup included a 100 kW allowable load capacity, 100 kW battery chargeable capacity, and 100 kW battery storage capacity. The system is powered by 480 solar panels, each generating 455 watts, providing a total photovoltaic (PV) generation capacity of 218.4 kW.

Desco director Giulio Airaga says this installation significantly reduced their dependency on the national grid, generating 13,552 kW from solar power and consuming only 5,385.20 kW from the grid during the first two months.

“Responding to the ongoing challenges of load shedding, we expanded our battery storage capacity by an additional 150 kW in 2022, bringing the total to 250 kW. This upgrade further stabilised operations, ensuring continuity even during periods of grid instability,” he explained.

Throughout 2022, the PV system generated 181,311 kW, with a reduced grid consumption of 21,063.60 kW. This positive trend continued into 2023, with solar generation reaching 194,568 kW and grid consumption at 25,608 kW.

In May 2024, Desco commenced the final stage of its solar project with the installation of a 500 kW off-grid inverter. This installation includes a 393 kW battery storage capacity and 744 new solar panels, each with a 550-watt output, bringing the total PV generation capacity to 409.2 kW.

By integrating this new system with the existing setup, the company aims to achieve a combined inverter capacity of 700 kW, battery storage capacity of 643 kW, and a PV generation capability of 627.6 kW. This ambitious project ensures that Desco can operate independently of the national grid, fulfilling its vision of uninterrupted, sustainable operations.

Airaga says this investment in solar energy underscores their dedication to sustainable practices. “This initiative is not just about reducing operational costs but also about leading by example in the renewable energy sector.”

“By minimising environmental impact and promoting a culture of sustainability within and beyond the organisation, Desco is paving the way for a greener future,” he concludes.
