Desco leads Uganda into a new era of eWaste recycling

Desco Electronic Recyclers, a leader in eWaste management and recycling, has taken significant strides in partnering with the Ugandan government to establish a robust eWaste management system in Uganda. This initiative aims to address the escalating eWaste challenge and its environmental and health impacts.

Desco director Giulio Airaga recently engaged in an in-depth discussion with Ugandan officials. This meeting marks the beginning of a collaborative effort to formalise and enhance eWaste processes in Uganda.

“We have been working with Southern African countries for several years, advising and helping them formalise their eWaste processes to ensure responsibility and compliance. Our goal is to expand our reach and offer our expertise to Uganda, supporting them in developing a sustainable and effective eWaste management system,” he explained.

The discussions focused on the critical need for comprehensive eWaste management strategies. Desco emphasised the importance of proper stakeholder roles to mitigate the environmental and health impacts of eWaste.

Airaga presented Desco’s advanced eWaste recycling processes, highlighting the necessity of collaborating with licensed recyclers and implementing the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) scheme to subsidise recycling costs.

Key concerns such as public participation, data management, and the risks associated with eWaste processing were also addressed. Desco provided valuable insights into incentivising recycling and ensuring compliance.

The meeting underscored the urgency of mitigating the negative impacts of eWaste on the environment and public health. Discussions included measures to prevent environmental risks, such as the use of protective equipment and dust capture systems.

Looking forward, participants discussed the sustainability of eWaste collection centres and the importance of government policies in supporting recycling efforts. The need for a clear strategy and sensitisation of the public was emphasised.

The current eWaste recycling infrastructure and data in Uganda will be investigated and discussions on eWaste management will continue. More importantly, the national committee on eWaste management will be approached to develop a roadmap for Uganda.

The collaboration between Desco Electronic Recyclers and the Ugandan government signifies a proactive step towards addressing the eWaste crisis. Through expert advice and strategic planning, this partnership aims to create a sustainable, efficient, and compliant eWaste management system in Uganda.
